Tower of Hercules – The oldest still working lighthouse in the world

 A Coruña, Galicia, Spain

Something is in this place, on this headland. I spent almost 2 whole nights there. Just sitting and watching while the waves crashing against the rocks. In fact, I began to wonder what really impressed me. A Coruña is a pretty, seaside town. It is said that this is a city of glass houses - all balconies are glazed, making a real impression.

It was built by the Romans in the first century AD - repeatedly rebuilt - today it looks completely different than its original. Currently, the Tower of Hercules is a huge object, structured on a square plan. It is 57 meters high and is the third highest lighthouse in Spain. In 1927, lighting was mounted on its top, visible from the sea even from a distance of 40 km. 242 stairs lead to the top and at the foot of the building, there is a huge compass rose on the Atlantic. The lighthouse is inscribed on the UNESCO list.

Legend about the Tower of Hercules

There are many legends related to the construction of the Torre de Hércules. The most important of them refers to the Greek myth of the twelve works of Hercules. The tenth task of the hero was the abduction of oxen guarded by the monster Gerion, a giant with three heads, three torsos and six hands. Hercules killed him with his own poisoned arrow. Then he buried the skull and bones in a mound on the hill, and placed a large torch on top of it. Next to the burial place of the monster, he founded the city. The first man to visit him was a woman named Crunna - hence the name of the city of A Coruña and the coat of arms - a skull in the crown buried under a lantern.

The place is cute. The road to the headland leads along the bay. The tower is visible from a distance. However, there is no indication that it is such a great place - it would just be stop and rest. At the very top, on the one hand, there is a path for walkers, cyclists and runners. Perfectly developed space. Every now and then there are benches where you can sit and enjoy the views of the silence. On the other hand, there is a stony road leading straight to the lighthouse.

In the evening, you can watch the wonderful sunset, accompanied by waves crashing against the rocks. You can not only rest here, but it is a very good place in my opinion to take thoughts and move forward.
